Suspended is a state, a moment, some kind of disbelief, a stalemated gesture frozen in its own established conditions. Richard Galling’s paintings deconstruct and utilize marks and gestures within a framework of abstraction, proposing a new system of painted signs. Daniel Shea’s objects and installations examine the mythologies and histories of the post-industrial ruin and a perceived material authenticity. Together their work offers an interplay between an aesthetic and conceptual modernism and industrial modernity. As one history implicates another, their work shown together suspends multiple moments in aesthetic and political lineages.

Temporal Figuration explores the loose and playful use of figural elements in each of the artists’ work. David Brandon Geeting employs commonplace techniques to explore visual possibilities in the seemingly banal, giving his inanimate subjects a human feeling. Andrew Holmquist combines abstraction with fragments of figural representation to depict elements, both tangible and impalpable, of the human experience. Jade Walker evokes and explores bodily forms and gender duality, piecing together found objects to create abstract sculptures. Each artist pulls the art out of the everyday and the ordinary with the manipulation of medium and material process.

LVL3 presents Three Vertices, a group show in honor of our two year anniversary. Three Vertices focuses on the abundance of triangular shapes appearing in contemporary artworks. This investigation into the shape and form of the triangle seeks to understand its functionality throughout the artists’ work. Alex Ebstein examines modernism and abstraction through a hybrid of painting, drawing and collage, using non-traditional and found materials. Nathan Green illustrates the intuitive nature of contemporary creative techniques and processes while employing methods of craft and construction that explore the formal and structural qualities of abstraction. Clay Hickson’s work explores the intersection between various post-modern influences and the positive sentiments that were central to the attitudes of 1960’s counter culture in order to produce topical manifestations focusing on shape and pattern. Samara Scott demonstrates an interest in texture, pattern and decor, pairing unlikely surfaces, both manmade and natural, with references to icons and symbols of everyday life. Lastly, Kaylee Rae Wyant utilizes the self-conscious nature that is inherently central to the inspiration and expression of most contemporary art, channeling both emotion and cynicism in order to produce works that are concurrently sentimental and carefully constructed.

In conjunction with our two year anniversary exhibition, LVL3 is excited to premier our new publications MRKT, where visitors can acquire artist books, limited editions and ephemera.

Holding onto Something Slippery renders visible the creation process through a combination of materials and a hybrid of mediums. Jerome Acks manipulates dimensionality and flatness, calling into question the materials and basic, physical elements of his works. Alika Cooper couples patchwork and layering of common fabrics, which portray intimate figures in camouflaged settings. Ryan Fenchel uses notions of craft and display as tools for discovery, accumulating ideas and materials to be arranged in various ways. All artists employ elements of craft, referencing traditional, if not domestic, means of creation in order to express the tensions between their forms.

I am The Queen takes a look at the often unobserved life of Chicago’s Puerto Rican transgender community. This film documents the Cacique Pageant, the first annual transgender/drag pageant held in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood. I am the Queen follows Bianca, Julissa, Jolizza and Alayna as they prepare for the Cacique Pageant and negotiate being a teenager and transgender in a predominantly Latino neighborhood of Chicago. The film exposes the restructuring of the family unit experienced by pageant participants who are often distanced from their biological family only to find kinship among others in their community. The MDW Fair presents a Fall Showcase of solo and duo exhibitions curated by small not-for-profits, artist-run spaces, independent galleries, collectives and curators from around the country. This iteration of the MDW Fair runs in conjunction with The Hand in Glove Conference and will highlight innovative curatorial and administrative practices happening in independent arts initiatives. The Fall Showcase will focus on the practices of individual artists, offering the opportunity for each artist to mount an ambitious project. The Fall Showcase, like the previous MDW Fair, will also feature an independent arts publisher’s forum.

In conjunction with the ACRE Residency program, LVL3 is pleased to present Real Space, an exhibition of new works by Alyse Ronayne, Bryan Lear, Dan Bradica and Zak Arctander. These four artists create work using recognizable forms and materials, re-contextualizing, de-contextualizing and transforming the familiar into the unfamiliar. Alyse Ronayne’s paper sculptures hover in liminal space, intermixing senses of luminosity and weightlessness with density and heft. Bryan Lear illuminates the interconnectedness between the ordinary and the rare with the use of simple transformations. Dan Bradica manipulates and intervenes with images of the natural, exploring relationships with perception, space and environment. Zak Arctander uses the image as surrogate to portray his light and dark subjects in a balanced scheme. These four artists will exhibit together in the generative spirit of the residency to support and institute their ongoing ideas.

Reduction or Something Less transforms and redefines the viewer experience, playing with one’s predetermined expectations of how we interact with visual art. Working in a broad variety of media, these artists emphasize the spatial, social and psychological relationships between a work of art and its spectator, creating an active viewing experience. Backman investigates the separation between painting and object, flat and dynamic, recreating the familiar with illusions and trompe l’oeil. Nichols delves into psychological experience, using childlike shapes and colors and intermingling fantasy and reality, while Guérin creates paintings using repetition and abstraction of shapes and forms. This grouping of artists will exhibit amongst each other to support and challenge views of the refined.

LVL3 is proud to present its first two person exhibition, This is the Same as That, featuring the work of

Dave Murray

and

Letha Wilson.

This is the Same as That explores the relationship between the real and the unreal, the physical and the imagined. Working in photography, sculpture, installation and performance, both artists play with materiality and material limitations in order to create a natural duplicity. Murray investigates the processes of assimilation and accommodation and how they work together to create value through accumulation. Wilson combines photographic images of natural landscapes with architectural elements, calling upon and questioning the ability of an artwork to carry its viewer. Drawing from minimalist influences, Murray and Wilson maintain the authority of concept over and above object in each of their artistic practices, while still creating visually striking work attainable to all audiences.

Letha Wilson lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She earned her BFA from Syracuse University and her MFA from Hunter College in New York City. In addition to her work having been exhibited nationally and internationally, Wilson has received a number of fellowships and awards, including a 2009 fellowship at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. Her work has been mentioned in various publications, such as the New Yorker, The New York Times, Time Out New York, Artnet Magazine and the Philadelphia Inquirer. Wilson recently completed an installation at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois, on view through November 27th.

Dave Murray lives and works in Chicago, Illinois. He earned his BFA from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts and his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has received a number of fellowships and awards, including the 2010 Hearst Foundation Visiting Artist Grant at the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, Florida. Murray’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States, most recently as part of a group show in The Queens Museum of Art in Queens, New York.
